Colima Volcano (Volcán de Colima) is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Mexico and North America, having erupted more than 40 times since 1576. Located on the border of Colima and Jalisco states in western Mexico, it is often called the “Mexican Vesuvius” due to its frequent activity and potential hazard. Over 300,000 people live within a 50 km (31 miles) radius, including residents of Colima, Ciudad Guzmán, and Tamasula de Gordiano, making it one of Mexico’s most closely monitored volcanoes.

The volcano rises to approximately 3,860 meters (12,664 feet) above sea level, and its crater spans about 300 meters (984 feet) in diameter, frequently changing shape due to ongoing eruptions. Colima Volcano is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, situated roughly 125 km (78 miles) north of Colima city, 80 km (50 miles) east of the Pacific Ocean coast, 165 km (103 miles) south of Guadalajara, and 600 km (373 miles) west of Mexico City. Its dramatic landscapes and volcanic activity attract geologists, adventure travelers, and photography enthusiasts.
