Independence Square (Plaza Independencia) is the central historic plaza in the colonial heart of Pachuca de Soto, the capital of Hidalgo State, Mexico. Its most iconic feature is the Monumental Clock of Pachuca (Reloj Monumental de Pachuca), standing approximately 40 meters (131 feet) tall. Built to commemorate the centennial of Mexicoโs War of Independence, the clock tower was officially inaugurated on September 15, 1910. Independence Square has long served as a public, commercial, and ceremonial hub, surrounded by historic buildings, theaters, and arcades. Throughout the 20th century, the plaza underwent several renovations and beautification projects, preserving its colonial charm while enhancing its role as a city gathering space.
Pachuca de Soto is located in the Comarca Minera region on the Central Mexican Plateau at an elevation of about 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) above sea level, approximately 96 km (60 miles) northeast of Mexico City. The city has a population of around 267,751 within its 60 kmยฒ (23 square miles) area, while the greater metropolitan area exceeds 665,000 residents.
