The Illinois Railway Museum is the largest railway museum in the United States, located in the village of Union, approximately 88 kilometers (55 miles) northwest of downtown Chicago. The museum was founded in 1953 and was originally named the Illinois Electric Railway Museum, reflecting its focus on preserving electric railway vehicles.

In 1961, the museum was renamed the Illinois Railway Museum to reflect the expansion of its collection, which now includes locomotives, historic passenger and freight cars, and a variety of railway equipment. Today, it houses one of the largest and most diverse collections of rolling stock in the country, including steam engines, diesel locomotives, trolleys, electric trains, service cars, and rare fully restored exhibits.

Visitors to the museum can not only view hundreds of historic trains but also ride on operational exhibits during the warmer months. The Illinois Railway Museum regularly hosts themed events, demonstrations, educational programs, and family festivals, preserving and promoting Americaโ€™s rich railway heritage.
