ócalo Square (Spanish: Plaza del Zócalo), also called Constitution Square (Plaza de la Constitución), is the main plaza of Mexico City and the largest city square in Latin America, as well as one of the largest public squares in the world. The rectangular plaza features stunning Baroque architecture and is home to iconic landmarks such as the National Palace (Palacio Nacional), Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, and the historic City Hall.

Located in the heart of Mexico City’s historic center, Zócalo Square sits on the site of Montezuma II’s palace before the Spanish conquest of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán. The square is a popular destination for walking, sightseeing, and cultural events. Surrounding the plaza are numerous hotels, restaurants, cafés, shops, and shopping centers. Just a short 500 meters (1,640 feet) north is the Palace of the Marqués del Apartado (Palacio del Marqués del Apartado), built between 1795 and 1805 atop an ancient Aztec pyramid.
