The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is a striking modern cable-stayed bridge spanning the Charles River in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Named in honor of civil rights leader and community activist Leonard P. Zakim, the bridge opened in 2003 and quickly became one of Bostonโs most recognizable landmarks. Its bold architecture and dramatic nighttime lighting make it a favorite destination for visitors and photographers alike.
The bridge measures 436 meters (1,430 feet) in total length and 56 meters (184 feet) in width. Its twin pylons rise 82 meters (269 feet) above the river, while the central span stretches 227 meters (745 feet). With eight main traffic lanes (four in each direction) plus two auxiliary lanes, the Zakim Bridge is considered one of the widest cable-stayed bridges in the world.
As part of Interstate 93 (I-93), the bridge serves as the primary northern gateway to Downtown Boston. It connects the historic neighborhoods of Charlestown and the North End, playing a critical role in regional traffic flow and Bostonโs modern transportation network.
