Panama City, officially Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Panamá, is the largest city and capital of Panama, serving as the country’s political, economic, and cultural center. Founded on August 15, 1519, by Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias de Ávila on the site of a Guarani settlement, Panama City has grown into a bustling metropolis with a population of approximately 1.3 million residents.
Located on the Pacific coast along the Gulf of Panama, in central Panama, the city enjoys a subequatorial tropical climate with hot, humid weather year-round. The long wet season lasts from April to December, while the short dry season runs from January to March. Average temperatures range from 24–32 °C (75–90 °F), with high coastal humidity.
Panama City is the economic powerhouse of Panama, generating about 55% of the national GDP. Its economy is driven by the Panama Canal, international trade, finance, banking, logistics, and tourism. The city’s port is one of Latin America’s largest for both passengers and cargo, welcoming hundreds of cruise ships annually and providing seamless access to canal transits.
The city is also a major cultural hub. Visitors can admire the modern skyline and skyscrapers, wander the historic Casco Viejo district, and explore world-class museums, theaters, and galleries. Panama City is the perfect gateway to Panama’s natural attractions, including tropical rainforests, pristine Pacific and Caribbean beaches, and islands in the Gulf of Panama, making it a prime destination for both business travelers and tourists.
