New York City is the largest city in the United States and one of the world’s most influential global metropolises, playing a key role in finance, business, culture, and tourism. The city is located on the East Coast, in southeastern New York State, along the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean. It sits about 149 km (93 miles) northeast of Philadelphia and 352 km (219 miles) southwest of Boston. As of 2023, New York has a population of approximately 8.5 million people and is a major financial hub, home to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and other global trading centers.

Founded in 1624 by Dutch settlers as New Amsterdam, the city came under British control in 1664 and was renamed New York. Its prime location and deep-water port quickly established it as a center of trade and immigration. From the late 19th century onward, millions of immigrants arrived through New York, shaping its rich multicultural and diverse character. Manhattan, with its iconic skyline and skyscrapers, became a symbol of business, finance, and the city’s global influence.

Lower Manhattan, at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, is the historic heart of the city and remains its financial and business core. This area includes the Financial District, Tribeca, Chinatown, and SoHo, and is home to landmarks such as Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange, One World Trade Center, Battery Park, and the waterfront of New York Harbor. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Statue of Liberty—one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States—situated in Upper New York Bay, as well as the busy harbor and city streets that define the energy of New York City.
