The Cocolí Locks are a critical part of the Panama Canal Expansion (Neo-Panamax Project) on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal, near Arraiján, west of Panama City. Opened in 2016, these modern locks allow the transit of massive Neo-Panamax vessels, significantly increasing the canal’s global shipping capacity.
The lock system features three chambers measuring 427 m (1,401 ft) long, 55 m (180 ft) wide, and 18.3 m (60 ft) deep, accommodating ships up to 366 m (1,201 ft) in length. Advanced water-saving basins reuse up to 60% of freshwater per transit, making the Cocolí Locks one of the most efficient and sustainable canal systems in the world.
Together with the Agua Clara Locks, the Cocolí Locks enable the Panama Canal to handle around 6% of global maritime trade, reinforcing its role as a vital link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
