The live webcam shows the Portage Canal Lift Bridge in Houghton, Michigan, USA.
The Portage Canal Lift Bridge is a prominent transportation and engineering landmark in Houghton, located in the northwestern part of Michiganโs Upper Peninsula. The bridge spans the Portage Canal, a navigable waterway connecting Lake Superior with Portage Lake, and serves as the main link between the cities of Houghton and Hancock on opposite sides of the canal.
Designed as a vertical lift bridge, the structure regularly rises to allow recreational boats and commercial vessels to pass through the canal. It carries U.S. Route 41 (US-41), the primary highway of Michiganโs Upper Peninsula. During the navigation season, frequent bridge lifts make this crossing a popular local attraction and an excellent spot for watching ship traffic in real time.
Houghton is the county seat of Houghton County and sits directly along the Portage Canal. The city is known for its rich copper-mining history and as the home of Michigan Technological University, one of the leading engineering and technology-focused universities in the United States. Today, Houghton has a population of approximately 8,000 residents and serves as an important cultural, educational, and transportation hub in the region.
