The Portage Canal Lift Bridge is a prominent transportation and engineering landmark in Houghton, located in the northwestern part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The bridge spans the Portage Canal, a navigable waterway connecting Lake Superior with Portage Lake, and serves as the main link between the cities of Houghton and Hancock on opposite sides of the canal.

Designed as a vertical lift bridge, the structure regularly rises to allow recreational boats and commercial vessels to pass through the canal. It carries U.S. Route 41 (US-41), the primary highway of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. During the navigation season, frequent bridge lifts make this crossing a popular local attraction and an excellent spot for watching ship traffic in real time.
