Round Lake is a scenic inland lake located in the heart of Charlevoix, a city in northern Michigan. It plays a central role in the city’s layout and gives Charlevoix much of its unique character. The lake is also a key part of the regional water system, connecting Lake Charlevoix with Lake Michigan through the navigable Pine River, also known as the Round Lake Channel. Today, Round Lake is one of the city’s main public and tourist destinations, attracting both residents and visitors year-round.

The lake’s nearly perfect circular shape inspired its name. Its shoreline is lined with a marina, numerous boat and yacht docks, waterfront promenades, parks, restaurants, shops, and historic downtown buildings. Sheltered from the waves of Lake Michigan, Round Lake serves as a natural harbor, making it especially popular with boaters and yacht owners during the boating season.

The Pine River Channel allows vessels to travel between Lake Michigan, Round Lake, and Lake Charlevoix, connecting northern Michigan’s inland waterways. In downtown Charlevoix, the US-31 Island Lake Outlet Bridge spans the channel and is regularly raised to let yachts, recreational boats, and passenger vessels pass. During summer, this area becomes one of the city’s liveliest and most scenic spots, where busy marine traffic blends with vibrant waterfront activity and strolling pedestrians.
