Querétaro (Spanish: Santiago de Querétaro) is the capital of Querétaro State and one of Mexico’s most important historical, economic, and cultural centers. The city is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved colonial architecture, vibrant cultural scene, rapid economic growth, and high quality of life. Querétaro is located in central Mexico, in the El Bajío region, approximately 220 km (137 miles) northwest of Mexico City and 360 km (224 miles) east of Guadalajara. The city has a population of over 1.1 million residents and spans about 759 km² (293 sq miles).

Founded in 1531 by Spanish colonizers alongside indigenous groups such as the Otomí and Tarascan peoples, Querétaro quickly became a key hub for trade, religion, and culture due to its strategic location and fertile lands. The city played a pivotal role in Mexico’s War of Independence; in 1810, a secret society formed in Querétaro to initiate the uprising against Spanish rule. Its historic center, home to numerous colonial-era buildings, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Today, Querétaro is a thriving modern city that perfectly blends historical charm with contemporary infrastructure and a strong industrial sector. Top attractions include the historic city center with its cobblestone streets, colonial plazas, and architecture; the 18th-century Querétaro Aqueduct (El Acueducto); the central Plaza de Armas; the Convento de la Santa Cruz (Church of the Holy Cross); and the 17th-century Templo de San Francisco, the city’s oldest cathedral. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve offers unparalleled biodiversity, making it an ideal destination for eco-tourism, hiking, and wildlife exploration.
