Hinterstoder is a scenic town and municipality located in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems, in the federal state of Upper Austria. Nestled in the valley of the Stoder River at an elevation of 590 meters (1,936 feet) above sea level, it lies close to the border with the neighboring state of Styria. Hinterstoder is surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Totes Gebirge (Dead Mountains), including Grosser Priel (2,514 meters / 8,248 feet), Kleiner Priel (2,134 meters / 7,001 feet), Spitzmauer (2,446 meters / 8,024 feet), and Warscheneck (2,389 meters / 7,838 feet). The municipality spans an area of 150 km² (57.9 square miles) and is home to just around 950 residents.

The first recorded mention of the town dates back to the year 1240. At that time, the settlement was called “Stoder,” a name believed to mean “stony land” or “cold land” in Slovak. In the 12th century, the region became part of Austria after it was taken from the Duchy of Bavaria. Tourism began to develop in 1890, and by 1910, Hinterstoder had started to grow as a ski resort. The region has an alpine climate, with cold, snowy winters and cool summers — ideal conditions for both winter sports and summer tourism. In winter, the area offers over 40 kilometers (24.9 miles) of ski slopes with 14 lifts, a snow park, and the Sunny Kids children’s area. During the summer, visitors can explore 14 circular hiking trails that lead to scenic viewpoints such as Dachsteinblick and Stoderblick.

Tourism plays a key role in Hinterstoder’s economy. In winter, the region attracts ski enthusiasts with slopes suitable for all skill levels, including the famous Hannes Trinkl World Cup course. In summer, hiking, cycling routes, and various outdoor activities are popular among visitors. Notable attractions in Hinterstoder include an artificial pond, constructed between 1897 and 1902, known as the “Jewel of the Stoder Valley,” as well as the Alpineum Hinterstoder — a modern museum dedicated to the region’s history, the development of mountaineering, and alpine skiing. Hinterstoder is easily accessible via the A9 motorway. The nearest train station, Hinterstoder Bahnhof, opened in 1906, provides convenient connections to other parts of Austria.
