Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria, as well as the country’s political, economic, and cultural center. It is one of Austria’s nine federal states. Covering an area of approximately 415 square kilometers (160 square miles), Vienna is the smallest in terms of area among all nine federal states. The city has a population of over 1.8 million people, and its metropolitan area, including the suburbs, is home to more than 2.6 million residents—nearly 25% of Austria’s total population. Vienna ranks sixth among the most populous cities in the European Union and second only to Berlin among German-speaking cities worldwide.
Vienna is also one of the oldest cities in Europe, with a history spanning over 4,000 years. Thanks to its rich heritage and numerous landmarks, Vienna remains one of the top tourist destinations in Europe. The city is located along the banks of the Danube River, at the foothills of the Alps in northeastern Austria, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of the Slovak border and the capital city of Bratislava. The historic city center lies at the confluence of the small Vienna River and the Danube. Vienna has a temperate climate, characterized by hot, sunny summers and mild winters with frequent heavy snowfall. Average summer temperatures range between 25–30 °C (77–86 °F), while winter temperatures often dip below 0 °C (32 °F).
This live webcam offers a panoramic view of Vienna from the Haus des Meeres – Aqua Terra Zoo, the largest aquarium in Austria. The camera is directed north toward the historic center of the city. The Haus des Meeres opened in 1956 and is housed in a unique 11-story concrete tower, originally constructed during World War II as part of the city’s air defense system. The building has a distinct, broad tower-like shape and rises to a height of approximately 50 meters (164 feet). On the 11th floor, you’ll find the observation deck, which provides a breathtaking 360-degree view over the entire city of Vienna.
