The Haus des Meeres – Aqua Terra Zoo is Austria’s largest public aquarium, located in the Mariahilf district of Vienna, the nation’s capital. Housed inside a historic 11-story building standing 50 meters (164 feet) tall, the aquarium occupies a massive concrete tower originally constructed during World War II as part of the city’s air defense system. After the war, the building was repurposed, and in 1956, it became the new home of the Haus des Meeres. Since then, it has undergone extensive development and now spans over 5,000 square meters (53,820 square feet) of exhibit space.

The aquarium is home to more than 1,100 species of animals, birds, and fish — including many rare, exotic, and endangered species. Visitors can see everything from piranhas, sharks, and turtles to seahorses, clownfish, triggerfish, butterflyfish, and more. A large tank holding 300,000 liters (nearly 80,000 gallons) allows guests to observe marine life up close, thanks to specially designed viewing areas built into the aquarium floors.

In addition to its rich collection of aquatic life, the Haus des Meeres also offers insights into the history of the building itself — including its original military purpose during WWII. On the 11th floor, visitors can access a panoramic observation deck with breathtaking views across nearly all of Vienna from above.

The Haus des Meeres offers a wide variety of activities and interactive experiences for both children and adults. Guests can participate in shark and piranha feeding sessions, take part in diving experiences with sharks using special gear, and enjoy guided tours and educational programs. Several on-site restaurants and cafés provide refreshments and dining with views of both the aquariums and the city skyline.
