Nieuwpoort meaning “new harbor” in Dutch, is a port city and one of the most popular seaside resorts in Belgium. It is located in the province of West Flanders in the northwestern part of the country, on the North Sea coast where the Yser River flows into the sea. Nieuwpoort lies approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of Brussels and has a population of over 11,300 residents. The city covers an area of about 31 square kilometers (12 square miles).

Nieuwpoort is traditionally divided into two main areas: the historic city center, located about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) inland, and the seaside tourist district that stretches along the North Sea coast. The city attracts numerous visitors with its classic Belgian architecture and wide sandy beaches. Major attractions in Nieuwpoort include the Church of Our Lady, the De IJzermonding Nature Reserve, and the Nieuwpoort Marina, which is one of the largest yacht harbors in Europe.

The climate is classified as temperate maritime, with cool summers and mild winters, thanks to the city’s coastal location and the influence of the warm Gulf Stream current. Average summer temperatures are around +20 °C (68 °F), while average winter temperatures hover near +4 °C (39 °F). During the winter months, temperatures rarely drop below 0 °C (32 °F).
