Atanasovsko Lake Live Cam, Burgas, Bulgaria
The live webcam showcases Atanasovsko Lake in the city of Burgas, Bulgaria.
Located between the Izgrev and Sarafovo districts of Burgas in southeastern Bulgaria, Atanasovsko Lake is separated from the Burgas Bay of the Black Sea by the Atanasovska Spit. It forms part of the Burgas Lake Complex and is connected to the Black Sea through several small channels that allow seawater to flow into the lake. Atanasovsko Lake is renowned for its rich plant and animal life.
The lake covers a total area of 7,208.89 hectares (17,813.5 acres), with a length of approximately 9 km (5.6 miles) and a width of 4.3 km (2.7 miles). Its average depth is about 0.3 meters (1 foot). A new road, built across an artificially created dam, connects Burgas to the airport, northern resorts, and Varna. This road divides the lake into two parts, which remain interconnected and linked to the Black Sea via channels. The lake has been used for salt production since 1906 and continues to be a significant site for this industry due to the high salinity of its water. Approximately 40,000 tons of sea salt are harvested annually.
Atanasovsko Lake is also a popular destination for visitors. In summer, the lake’s water takes on a pink hue due to the presence of Dunaliella salina algae. The lake’s therapeutic mud, rich in sulfides and hydrogen sulfide, has a distinctive odor and beneficial properties. In the southern part of the lake, free pools filled with therapeutic mud and brine are available for public use at no cost. Nearby, the “Point” observation post attracts birdwatching enthusiasts, as the lake lies along the “Via Pontica” migratory bird route.
