Köflach is a picturesque town located in the federal state of Styria in southeastern Austria, nestled at the foot of the Stubalpe mountain. The town lies approximately 54 kilometers (about 34 miles) west of Graz, Austria’s second-largest city after the capital, Vienna. Part of the Voitsberg District, Köflach covers an area of around 43.42 square kilometers (16.76 square miles). As of January 1, 2024, the town has a population of approximately 9,601 residents. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush forests, Köflach is an appealing destination for nature lovers. Historically, the town was known as a center for coal mining. However, in recent years, Köflach has undergone significant economic transformation, shifting from an industrial hub toward a more service-oriented economy.
Among Köflach’s top attractions is the Piber Federal Stud Farm (Bundesgestüt Piber), where the world-famous Lipizzaner horses are bred. These elegant white horses are known for their performances at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Each year, around 40 foals are born at the farm, beginning life with a dark coat and gradually turning white as they mature. Another highlight is the Therme NOVA, a modern thermal spa resort offering a wide range of wellness treatments and pools fed by mineral-rich springs from nearby Piber. It’s a popular destination for relaxation and health-focused retreats.
The nearby Stubalpe mountain provides excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, skiing, and other activities throughout the year. With elevations and scenic trails, it’s a favorite among both locals and tourists. Köflach also hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year. The local House of Art and Culture regularly features exhibitions showcasing the work of regional artists, enriching the town’s vibrant cultural life.
