Köflach (German: Köflach) is a town located in the federal state of Styria in southeastern Austria. It serves as the administrative center of the Voitsberg District. The town has a population of approximately 9,689 people and covers an area of 43.07 square kilometers (16.63 square miles). Köflach lies at an elevation of about 449 meters (1,473 feet) above sea level, nestled in the foothills of the Alps at the base of Mount Stubalpe. It is situated roughly 54 kilometers (34 miles) west of Graz, the second-largest city in Austria after the capital, Vienna.
Köflach’s economy has traditionally been centered around coal mining and industry. In recent decades, however, the town has shifted more toward the service sector and tourism—thanks in large part to its proximity to natural attractions and cultural landmarks. Among Köflach’s most notable attractions are the Piber Federal Stud Farm (Bundesgestüt Piber), where Lipizzaner horses are bred for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna; the historic Church of St. John the Baptist; as well as several local museums and cultural centers.
